07.04.2007 // data disaster

Last week the unthinkable happened. My raid crashed during a maintenance operation. I lost all my data. The last three years of my life erased in an instant. All my work, personal web pages, photos, music, all gone, and no backups. No backups?? Yes crazy. But hardly anyone bothers to make backups do they? Well I learned my lesson and now I do make backups. In fact I have a very good system in place now. Better late than never heh. The realization I had lost all my data at first left me annoyed and dazed. What would I do now? The thought of abandoning design and programming, and doing something else with my life did cross my mind. Only briefly though. Instead I decided to pick up the pieces and start over. In a way it's been quite a liberating experience. Letting go of the past, the accumulated baggage and clutter. The many half-started projects, disorganisation and chaos. Being forced to start over has given me the opportunity to evaluate and plan better. In a way it's a blessing in disguise. Now I'm not suggesting everyone should go and format their hard drives, but perhaps there are some lessons to be learned here.

Yesterday I discovered a long lost backup and managed to restore my old website! I also found all my old photos so I'm very pleased.
